SUMMARY:USF Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Team Takes on Sacramento State\, Followed by Men’s Squad vs. Loyola Chicago \nChase Center will host the annual USF Legacy\, the college basketball double-header featuring the University of San Francisco (USF) men’s and women’s teams\, on Wednesday\, December 17. The event marks the sixth time both USF teams will play at Chase Center\, with the women’s team matching up against Sacramento State to start the day and the men’s team taking on Loyola University Chicago in the second game. Game times will be announced at a later date. \nFresh off a successful 2024-25 season that included double-digit conference wins for the fourth time in five seasons\, the University of San Francisco women’s basketball team finished the regular season in fifth place in the West Coast Conference. The Dons return Sol Castro and Paula Tirado from last year’s team as well as a new mix of incoming freshmen and transfers. A two-time NCAA champion (1990\, 1992) as a player at Stanford\, Head Coach Molly Goodenbour enters her 10th season at the helm of USF. \nUnder the direction of third-year head coach Aaron Kallhoff\, Sacramento State is coming off a 2024-25 campaign that saw the Hornets finish 15-18 overall and 7-11 in the Big Sky Conference\, advancing to the second round of the league’s postseason tournament for the third consecutive year and tying for the third-best year-to-year improvement in the program’s Division I history. This year’s matchup marks the first meeting between Sacramento State and USF since the 2020-21 season. \nFollowing its third postseason appearance in four years\, the University of San Francisco men’s basketball team returns seven student-athletes from last year\, including All-West Coast Conference (WCC) Freshman Team selection Tyrone Riley IV and the 2023-24 WCC Freshman of the Year Ryan Beasley. Entering his fourth year as head coach of the Dons\, Chris Gerlufsen guided the team to 20-plus wins in 2024-25\, the eighth time in the last nine seasons the program has reached the 20-win mark. USF has earned back-to-back top-three finishes in the WCC\, marking the first time in 22 years (2001-02 and 2002-03) the team has accomplished that feat. \nDrew Valentine enters his fifth year as head coach of the Loyola men’s basketball team as the Ramblers look to improve upon their 25-12 regular season record in 2024-25\, which tied for second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference. In the postseason\, Loyola made a run at the semifinals of the 2025 National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Valentine is eager to continue his success as he has guided the Ramblers to 23-or-more wins in three of his four seasons as head coach. The matchup between San Francisco and Loyola will mark the ninth meeting all-time between the two programs.
