Spring brings longer days, blooming flowers—and a tidal wave of tiny, meowing fluffballs! It’s kitten season in the Bay Area, and that means animal shelters like Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) are busier than ever.
Here’s the good news: Whether you’re a parent juggling snack time and soccer practice or a kid who’s obsessed with animals, there are easy, meaningful ways to help.
1. Wait Before You Rescue
Spotted a litter of kittens outside? Your first instinct may be to scoop them up—but press pause. If the kittens look clean, quiet, and well-fed, mom is likely nearby searching for food. She’s their best chance at survival. Teach your kids to “observe like a wildlife explorer” before touching or moving any animals.
Kid Tip: Make it a science moment! Set a timer and have your child log how long it takes for mama cat to return (from a safe distance, of course).
2. Foster Kittens
Fostering is a fantastic way to help. Your family gives kittens a safe space to grow before they’re adopted—plus, it’s a lot of fun. HSSV and many other shelters provide the food, formula, and vet care. You provide the snuggles.
Kid Tip: Have your child help with naming the kittens, creating social media adoption posts (hello, future influencer!), and gentle playtime.
3. Donate Supplies or Host a Kitten Drive
Caring for kittens requires bottles, blankets, heating pads, and more. Donations of supplies or funds go a long way. Get your child involved by organizing a school or neighborhood donation drive.
Kid Tip: Let them decorate a “Kitten Collection Box” or write a short speech for morning announcements at school to rally support.
4. Be a Fix-It Family: Spay & Neuter
One of the most powerful ways to help kittens? Prevent unwanted litter. Spay and neuter your pets and encourage your neighbors to do the same.
Kid Tip: Have older kids research the benefits of spaying/neutering and present what they learned during family dinner or a classroom presentation.
No matter your age, there’s a role for everyone in protecting and caring for kittens this season—and every small act of kindness adds up to a big impact. Visit our Kitten Season page for more ways to help and resources to get started.
