There’s no doubt that moms have many superpowers. Somedays, one superpower might be stronger than another (The Multitasker), some days a new superpower appears when we need it most (The Get to Sleeper), our children are faced with a new obstacle and we have to intervene (The Homework Helper), or cupcakes are needed for the class party—tomorrow (The Pinterest Pinpointer). Once we discover the new superpower, we add it to our arsenal.
Of course, I would say that I too have many mom superpowers, but to my family, I am affectionately known as The Finder. I can find anything and most times I do not have to even get up to go looking! Just this past weekend, the kids and I were in the car waiting patiently for dad. He was taking quite a while, and I told the kids “I bet Dad can’t find his wallet.” Well, sure enough, I get a text message saying, “I can’t find my wallet.” I ask him if he looked in the usual places (a place on the counter where his things are supposed to go, pants from yesterday, backpack, bedroom, couch cushion. Not there, not there, and not there. So here comes The Finder to the rescue. I get out of the car and check all of those spots first and low and behold, it’s in his backpack. “But I looked there and it wasn’t there. How do you do that?”
I can find anything. There have been times, I kid you not, that I will walk into a room and whatever they are searching for will be found. I have even received phone calls from my family while they are at work or school and they will ask me to use my superpowers. My husband has even been across the country on a work trip and he will ask me to help him find something.
This week my 12-year-old son got out Legos that he hasn’t played with since we moved over a year ago and, not 10 minutes later I hear, “Mom, I need your powers to help me find a piece.” This is what I’m dealing with, but guess what? I found it!
It may be my voice of reason and calm demeanor that helps them retrace their steps and stop freaking out, but I will continue to call it my superpower. Might there be a TV or movie script here in the making? The Finder. Sounds ominous, doesn’t it?
